TIMs 2016-2020 Oklahoma Mission

Oklahoma Moms Need Your Support

Black Pregnant Mom

It has been a long journey for many mothers here in the state of Oklahoma! Often times I wondered if our mission was taking root in the community as we shifted from place to place, city to city. Then one day I was given a divine message to pack light. Now I could have taken that several different ways. One way could have been to leave everything and follow my passion…

While the other could have meant to take my “light” with me wherever I go. I chose the second. Interpreting that light as my God and my guide. Now here I am, with my lovely Native born Oklahoman husband, and three male children. Watching them play and interact with one another as we go throughout our homeschool day. Managing our process and getting better everyday.

This might sound trivial and out of step of a business owner to post such transparencies.

… But it was transparencies that created this  mission you are reading on our website.

It was passion.

It was advocacy for whole family life.

It was about community.

And now that we are in the best place to “re-launch” our maternal health and wellness campaign that states our message loud, clear and unapologetically. We are 100% sure of our culture and how it relates to childbirth, and breastfeeding, and the disparities right here in the place, we hold residency. It is to no surprise that this is not just an issue here, but across the globe. That is why we need to garner the support of our fellow Oklahoman community to say once and for all… We care that one woman dies every minute during childbirth, yet almost all of these deaths are preventable. Here in the state of Oklahoma we have created a strategy to help reduce that number by 2020.

So What’s Up With TIM

When we began this journey into maternal and child health and wellness, we had only a birds eye view of how deep we would be guided into the community. We knew early on that we wanted to be an effective resource in the natural childbirth community, due to the various circumstances we had faced personally, and where we had been of service per our own expertise, which is in homebirth.

Now we have managed to create dynamic support systems and that offers us authentic relationships that many told us – we should not have privilege to because, we were not “alphabetically qualified.” Even though our experiences, and research, and self-apprenticed learning styles, didn’t measure up with privileged practices.

We are a grassroots social welfare organization with a mind to stand up to corporate and privatized organizations and companies that say the issues in the Black community are too much to resolve. Well this year we will finish with a bang because, we will not stop until we see a shift in the issues of crisis  within our urban and rural communities.

So we are taking deeper breaths.

We are creating broader relationships.

And we are doing it all on a dental floss budget.

Our Why…

One woman dies every minute during childbirth, yet almost all of these deaths are preventable. In 2001, the UN set itself the goal of slashing maternal mortality by 75% by 2015, but it is nowhere near meeting that target. “Surgery of any kind has risk,” and a C-section is, “still the riskiest way to have a baby. “In the US, almost one third of women have that procedure for delivery of their baby.”

The statistics on maternal mortality in America tell a shocking story when it comes to African-American women. They are three to four times more likely to die during childbirth than white American women. Dr Bill McCool says that even wealthy black American women have a higher rate of mortality during childbirth than wealthy white women.

Maternal mortality around the world

“People have looked at this from different angles. We know that African-American women tend to have higher blood pressure than the rest of the population, so is there a link there?”JoAnne Fischer, Executive Director of the Maternity Care Coalition, which works with low income women to help them stay healthy during their pregnancies, says: “We do know that there is extraordinary stress involved in racism and in being poor. “”And we know that sometimes this creates hypertension.” Hypertension, obesity and diabetes are all linked, so we have to make sure women start their pregnancies healthy.

“Dr Bill Callaghan, of the CDC, finds that not knowing why African-American women are at greater risk when giving birth has given him and his colleagues’ sleepless nights.” We can say that some of this may be due to socio-economic disparities. “But it does not explain all of it. “And to the extent that we don’t explain racial disparity in pregnancy-related mortality, we’re going to have difficulty making headway into it.” As doctors and US officials try to work out why American women are dying in childbirth, and what can be done to prevent it, Jim Scythes is still mourning his wife Valerie, who was all too briefly a mother.

Our Solution For Shifting The Rates In Oklahoma

In order for us to see a difference we need to shift the way we approach the childbirth community. Together using our history with #GivingTuesday global campaign we can make a big difference. Particularly in the African American community and others of color. The mindset regarding traditional childbirth has been diminished, with the practice of new wave technology and expensive research campaigns that warrant no solution. These outcomes are not because women want to die or want their children to die. These outcomes are from a deep rooted seed in the neurological DNA of generations of post traumatic stress as it relates to the Black community and slavery.

This type of cognitive dissonance is the paramount to our childbearing community.  It is our goal to build a committee or coalition of nonprofits, small businesses, and other community leaders to organize a #GivingTuesday movement in materno-toxic areas in the city and surrounding areas. There has been an assault on the womb of all women. This is at a very social and scientific disadvantage. In the state of Oklahoma, there is a core network of privileged, white led childbirth organizations that have not been able to penetrate the community of color. This adversity adds no value to the economic, social, and health care advantages that impacts the way women are giving birth. These include language and cultural barriers. This makes it extremely difficult to make clear and directed moves to support the agenda of the Maternal Mortality Review and Office of Minority Health in the state of Oklahoma.

It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it.”  – Albert Einstein

This is where our program offers a solution because, we have all taken the same route of creation. It is our obligation to put back into the world the equivalence of the best birth outcomes in communities that need it the most. So buy aligning with these organizations and offering women and men of color culturally competent, safe, evidence based education to support their community in childbirth, as certified birth work consultants, educators, and practitioners. Our networks of culturally centered organizations are ready and prepared to be added to our 2016 training calendar to add diversity to the childbirth community. You can help us make this possible in a variety of ways. First we have to determine why you should get involved.

WHY GET INVOLVED…

Purpose: To sensitize the community to the myriad problems that the childbirth community faces in the state of Oklahoma and the world today and motivate them to embrace a Cause that is meaningful to them.
Objectives: To discuss the basic necessities of life, or what is needed to be a part of a safe,
secure, and strong community.

To raise awareness about the most pressing issues, problems and concerns facing people around the globe – and at home regarding childbirth.

Running Question: WHAT IS THE PRIVILEDGE?

Investigate the idea of “privilege” in order to raise awareness about the way other populations DO and DO NOT experience privilege in our diverse communities. By having an elicit conversation about privilege we can get to the root of the cause, thus formulating a strategy to shift the image of disparity in childbirth, with RADICAL Change!

WHEN TO TAKE ACTION

In order to be effective we must take action now. That means to embrace the cause and start raising awareness and mobilize a core collective who is charged to make a difference.

Conclusion

We are a 100% parent led organization, by a husband and wife team of grassroots social entrepreneurs. We strive to maintain a free thinking environment that supports our artistic passions and goals to build our social welfare organization, The InTune Mother, LLC. And because we do everything from home. (i.e.) Home-birth, Home-school, and even work-from-home online, we really value our family life. We enjoy traveling, performing arts, and quality time with our 3 sons. The fact that we network for a living, is an experience that we aim to share with our core group of 3000 individuals across the globe. We dream in color and often remember the visions vividly. We set our intentions, these become our goals and we believe in our power to see them manifest. So we are only focused on mastering…

The Power of NOW!

We are a 100% parent led organization. Our primary goal is to find ways to keep other parents fully aware of all of their options pertaining to conception and childbirth. So we charged families to Birth Like A BOSS and began to strategize how they experienced childbirth. This is our why…

The BOSS Method Remix

As a Mother and Independent Perinatal Birth Consultant, I don’t expect change, I evoke change, with Father in mind, this power becomes we. This power becomes community.

Over the last few years, we became aware that not many childbirth organizations are led by minority women. So we found it necessary for us to “observe” this fact, and look for ways to employ some diversity, to the community of birth work. With the right setting and time, we can openly discuss how together we can heal the most traumatic racial disparities that affects the ecological footprint of the human family. When we appropriate our attention to the bigger problems then we find solutions. In the word “Sankofa” we must always remember to “reach back and get it.” This is our missing link to our success. In short, as modern day humans, I think we value technology too much, over our own intuition.

4

This discussion is not about race relations, as much as it is about the current human ecological crisis in the Black population. It is clear evidence when one group or population of people, are considered endangered by another group or population…

We have to challenge the consciousness of such science.

It looks like a league of unfamiliar saviors who speaks to the current issues, with an unfamiliar tongue, therefore confusing the proper dialog, with more disparity in our vulnerable communities.

We are not surviving because, we are disconnected from the NOW.

We are not surviving because we are not conscious of WHAT IS IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW?

What is most important, is that we direct our attention away from the frustration and anxiety, of what our community does not have, and who is not offering this or that. What are you doing to support the community. We have to become real. Time to get open and free your mind to find deliberate solutions. Easier said than done right… Well, within our consciousness, to get to the solutions and antidotes that our ancestors are speaking to us,  we have to begin with birth work. One woman, one baby, one family at a time.

Building On The Legacy of Sankofa

According To: HEALTHY START INITIATIVE

An Average Week In Oklahoma:

• 957 babies are born
• 150 babies are born to teen mothers (ages 15-19)
• 129 babies are born to mothers who receive inadequate prenatal care
• 71 babies are born low birth weight
• 112 babies are born preterm
• 8 babies die before their first birthday

Oklahoma ranks 6th in the United States on infant mortality.

The infant mortality rates for African Americans in our service area for every 1,000 live births, 13.6% of infants die.

The Time Is NOW! Be  An Ambassador.

Saturday May 7th will be our 1st Annual Black Carpet Community Brunch: Mimosas 4 Moms

By attending our Mimosas 4 Moms event, you will be helping our organization recognize the need of African American women in the field of birth work. In the state of Oklahoma the infant mortality rate has decreased over the last year, but the numbers are still staggering among the African American population. This event is geared to help the community understand how important it is that mothers have support from their 1st thru their 4th trimester.

Oklahoma has one of the highest rates in infant death in the U.S.

Every year about 100 families will tragically experience death of their new baby.

Black and Native American babies are 2 to 3 times more likely to die more than other populations.

We believe by adding more community based educators, that are trained with clear evidence based knowledge, and equipped with strategically designed tools for success, we can help reduce the numbers of mother and infant deaths in the state of Oklahoma for ALL women, with a strong focus on the disparities within the African American communities.

This event is two-fold

•One to celebrate recent graduates our 1st Community Certified Doula Training via our partnering organization Sista Midwife Productions. Class is scheduled for April 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, and May 1.  This event is to also reveal 20 Scholarship Awards for our 2nd training, June 13-17 via the “Accessible Doula Program” through The Matrona. This part of the Mimosas 4 Moms event that will be held in high esteem, the Saturday before Mother’s Day, May 7, 2016. (A limited number of seats are still available for both trainings.) Growing Up In 2015!

TIME TO SHIFT

Have you just simply outgrown your belief systems, but you’d rather stay in an uncomfortable place? It is okay to learn new ways to think. Most of us have been taught that we can only access 10% of our brain, but what if we began to expand outside of what we have known? Most of us only believe what we have been taught to think, feel, be… etc…

I was told that I had small hips and would not be able to give birth to my oldest son vaginally. Many women are fed that same story line… But my belief was different. I believed the Creator put baby inside me via my husband, whatever the size, baby would figure how to get itself out.

I lived with the thoughts of my own mothers birth horror story for so long, that once I became pregnant, I refused to relive her experience, through my own birth. I wanted to own my experience. So I worked on my vision of birth and I created the exact experience I wanted, and my husband, sacredly held that space for me. With each birth the power became more and more evident. Now together, my husband and I help other families, hold the creative space for the birth experience they want to have.

That is why TIM launched the #HAPPY2015 New Year campaign. We are so much more than a team of hyper focused childbirth consultants. We are professional game changers. And because we know righ now, there is a mental attact on the way childbirth is viewed — We believe NOW is the best time get intune, and to forgive yourself for letting others think for you. This kind of thinking doesn’t even require 10% of the proposed brain power that we are taught we to have access to.

It’s really simple…

Remember when you were a baby, traveling down the birth canal? There was padding an bumpers along the way, so you couldn’t just fall out of the vagina? Remember how safe you were? You were closest with God than any other time in your life. You could not read, nor write, nor were you speaking words —

But now with all the flimsy, plastic, radicalized, sterile, notions of coming into life, and what and how we should believe — Somehow we lost the connection to intute from our true mental environment.

Reality is false.

Time is draining.

And Matter…

Matter is… a fragile, yet tangible system, that many of us have to grow into, yet afraid to put on a size bigger for fear of looking or feeling the awkwardness of falling down.

But one thing is clear as the day that you were born…

One day you will shift. One day you will grow.

–And this growth will either come through wisdom or through woe. Its totally up to what your belief is around who you are that determines how you will birth.

#HAPPY2015

Summation Sunday ~ The Resurrection Of Motherhood

Tearing Down The Old Temple

Let me begin by saying there is no such thing as death. There is only the balance of transition and this is the burning contradiction that breaks the connection between being present and the vulnerability of fulfilling the bodies life purpose. What is no longer useful to the world will pass on into the next dimension and that includes human life. At the pace we live at, stress causes tremendous problems on our nervous system. That is why the breath is so important.  The breath of life is the greatest natural resource know to the human body. It nourishes our cells and tissues, bringing life back into our total being. Simple relaxation and deep breathing stimulates the vibration of the body, thus sealing the needed energy to help reset and rebuild the bodies full potential of mental, emotional, and physical performance. That is why old temples are being torn down. So it is far time that we begin to learn how to rebuild our temples one breath at a time.

From Home-Birthers to Spiritual Entrepreneurs

When my husband and I first decided to have a homebirth, seven years ago, we did not fully understand the process of familial transitions that we were about to undergo. Certain things were about to die… some of those things we were very passionate about. We really did not to plan for the transition from the regular lifestyle, we were accustomed to, so it was not easy. When we thought of traveling, visiting family and friends, or just spending time together, we were with our new baby and we needed more time. This meant that we had to stop making time and start managing our time for social equity. We were newly married, way from our parents, and winging the whole process of parenthood. So we tried to do a zillion things to make good on our commitments… My husband worked in theater and for #WellsFargo at the time and I owned and operated a natural hair salon by day and preformed at local venues by night. When we made up our minds to fully pursue our lives on purpose, we were introduced to abundance. Although this was awesome, we did not account for is the probability of time.

How did it get so late so soon? Its night before its afternoon. December is here before its June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?

TRANSITION: Moving On Up To The East Side

After we made the move from the West Coast to the East Coast it was totally derived off of the spirit of our subconscious mind. We wanted to be where the sun rose instead of where it set. We had creative ambitions and felt that we were no longer thriving in the Valley of The Sun. Upon our move, we did not get that deluxe apartment in the sky, but we were in positive motion. Seeing different faces everywhere, tall colorful trees, and in the Spring the ferocious green monster (pollen) would attack our sinus. It was a beautiful shift in culture, experience, and environment. After an emotional miscarriage, with our second baby, prior to our move to Georgia, we knew that we had to come to present, take mental notes, and feel what out bodies were speaking to us. Now after a record total of three successful homebirths, we found our mental niche. Our family tradition became our business. We had a 96% success rate and the other 4% was transitional favor.

Having a strong team working together at the very thing that we do best, which is being creative, making babies, and self expression, became our ministry of expertise. After the epiphany we had with the birth our our last son, we felt charged to assist other women and families, through our learned experiences. We soon embarked on a life of self-directed apprenticeships and disciplines. After studying with various universities, professionals, and coaching methodologies, reading book after book, and still reading, we found something very important — All of the theories were just as experienced based as our concepts and most were around medical reinterpretations. Some were spiritually divine, but still to the writers interpretation. We quickly realized that we had something to offer that we had not yet seen because, we had not yet produced it. So we channeled the balance between what we had experienced, and what we had learned about those experiences, into the services that we offer today called, “The BOSS Method.”

 Re-birthing Mother Nature’s Undisturbed Intent

The simplicity of childbirth is not commonly spoken of as a free, non-medical experience. Majority of the time when we tell people that we homebirth, they start saying things like, “Ut un… you brave”, “You didn’t have no medicine”, “Naw I couldn’t do that.” We smile and reply, why not? Then we get a laundry list of reasons that were really out of lack of information, fear, and/or limited access to information. Most of the reasons were generational jargon passed down from the societal transitions of natural childbirth. Some were because of the idea that homebirth had a hefty expense. Others were because, they simply did not know they had the option to deliver outside of the institution of medicine legally.

Some women share that they would have opted for homebirth if they would have know they could. Some women become frustrated because, they felt the option was hidden from them. Others felt tricked into inductions and surgical birth. This is where it get’s complicated. As I recall my first initial prenatal visit, and I was immediately told, that I would most likely have to deliver surgically because, my hips were so small. That was an immediate red flag for me and I knew that I had to make the decision to birth the way I wanted NOT the way I was profiled. Luckily the desire to Birth Like A BOSS was already in our cards. This is why my husband and I knew that we had to strategically get the word out to the community of those seeking an alternative to what they had been made to believe.

Summonsing Your Own Unique Truth

It really all begins with what you think about childbirth that sets the tone for how you will deliver. But let me get one thing clear… It is not the conscious mind that controls this process, but the subconscious mind that you have to learn how to navigate. The conscious mind is a remarkable thing, but there’s a whole other level of awareness that, when tapped, can greatly expand your abilities and allow you to achieve your goals in childbirth –and in life itself.

The subconscious mind has the ability to change your entire life around, if you know how to use it. Here are 9 steps that my husband and I exercise in order to build up our power of the Universe within and without. This includes thoughts, emotions, actions, and reactions.

STEP 1 : Practice “Stream of Consciousness” Journaling. Get a journal. Pick a nice pen to write with. Set a timer for 5-10 minutes and write whatever comes immediately to mind, continuing writing until the time is up no matter how dull, strange, weird, or whatever it sounds. Although at first this will channel your conscious mind, it will bring up unconscious thoughts. Have patience. Writing, at first, will be difficult but, with practice, becomes rather easy.

STEP 2 : Learn to meditate. There are many methods of meditation but all deal with focusing the mind, quieting it, and allowing you to harness it. Choose whichever appeals to you and be sure to practice daily, if only for a few minutes.

STEP 3 : Learn about the subconscious. The more you learn about the human mind, the more you can use it to enhance your life. Take coursework in psychology. Read The Four Agreements. Pray and/or create positive affirmations.

STEP 4 : Practice positive self talk. If you say to yourself, “I can’t do this, I’m going to fail,” you will fail. However, if you say, “I can do this. I know I can!,” you’re more likely to succeed. This process is known as “affirmation“.

STEP 5 : Visualize. This is one of the most significant keys to success. Actively picturing yourself achieving a goal will help you actually achieve it.

STEP 6 : Study briefly just before bedtime. This is especially helpful for things that require memorization. If you review the development of your baby, your positive words vocabulary list, or your homebirth play book just before sleeping, your subconscious will likely process it throughout the night for you.

STEP 7 : Pay attention to your dreams. Your deeper mind will sometimes try to sort out your life issues through dreams. If you pay attention to them, write them down immediately, and reflect on it, you may get insight to the problem at hand and this can help your transition though that particular issue.

STEP 8 : Listen to your intuition. Your intuition is a way your mind has of warning you of dangers or enlightening you to opportunities before your conscious mind has all the information. If you get a “red flag” feeling about a person or situation, do listen. This is often a key step in avoiding tragic opposition.

STEP 9 : Use different methods to develop your subconscious mind. Guessing things will help a lot. Just try to listen to your intuition and make predictions. Use different tools, for example Lumosity offers brain stimulating games and other cool mind enhancement tools. This also opens subconscious parts of your mind.

CONCLUDING THOUGHT

Any negative thoughts that you come up with should be removed, or replaced IMMEDIATELY. These negative thoughts are blocks on your subconscious and they prevent you from getting what you want. Negative thoughts are tied to strongly held beliefs – which further limit your success that are born out of fear. This combination of negative thinking and limiting beliefs lead to opposition and failure. The longer you hang on to them the worse your situation gets.

So what do you do?

BOSS Up! Change your mind, surrounding attitude NOW! Get rid of the mental baggage as quickly as possible.

Create thoughts that empower you, thoughts that allow you to succeed and enjoy your now life.

Negative thoughts and negative beliefs create a negative a life. They destroy any chance of successful outcomes.

You cannot succeed and enjoy life with chronic negative thinking or being around people who entertain negativity in any way. They are energy suckers.

Remember, your subconscious mind follows your thoughts and beliefs. It sees them as instructions and simply follows them. It creates your life based on your thoughts and beliefs. Your life is really a mirror of your thoughts and beliefs.

Wake Up Wednesday ~ No Apologies For Saving Black Babies… We Are Saving Humanity

NEW SLAVES WITH OLD SLAVE MENTALITY

This day in time is full of information and propaganda. Right here and now it is so much critical information to move beyond, just living day to day. According to #KanyeWest we are NEW SLAVES — slaves to the poverty mindset is surly the blood on the leaves. After reading for the 4th time this week about another young Black male child dead before 25, I am heavy. We use to have milestones in the life-cycle of our youth… Now we just have news reporters and statistics. As the proud wife of a remarkable Black man, with whom I parent three Black male children, together we feel that we HAVE TO BE STRATEGIC, in teaching our children the way of the current world. When my oldest son who was five at the time of the Travon Martin case — now he is seven and watching the Mike Brown case he asked, “Why do they always kill Black people? He went on the ask, was it safe to be a Black person… and profess his fear of being a Black male. So I have been very careful in order to write this bog post, with love and gratitude for self and kind first. This post could not only be about a distressed childbirth community of a problematic population of Black people. This is about a problematic society of ancestral backlash and we have all been tragically affected by the forceful root of slavery and the birth of the Negro American in the new world.

So we thank you for staying committed to our posts as we sort through the divinity of our hearts, and the best way to approach the stories we have been reading in the latest articles around the Black population regarding women, their children, and the power of the urban community through the “wonder years”. I really want to be transparent here and touch on some issues regarding the BLACK community, maternal health, and infant death from a deeper prospective, without being offensive. This seriously has to go above and beyond providing a population of people with “proper” education about how to have babies, what to eat, what to wear, and what is appropriate maternal behavior. This is bigger than telling a mom what activities not to engage in that can obviously be harmful to herself or the unborn baby. What this is about is a shift in cultural competencies, and the lack of urgency, to give Love and respect for self and kind. This is about the importance of the Black mother and her contribution to population to the human civilization as a whole. Lastly what this is about is… a long legacy of poor, undermined, strategic approaches to the falter of Black community, and the Black mother has ALWAYS been the main target.

BREAKING THE MENTAL CHAINS AGAIN AND AGAIN

We as healthy childbirth advocates, human rights activists, artist, philanthropists, and educators come in all sorts of colors. Our goals to make the world a better place to live for everyone is our commonality in humanity. The sad thing is that (Black people) have to take such a strategic approach, when attempting to execute any negativity or problematic issues, within our dying community. So why is it when minority people take the empowerment approach it is identified as being racist and/or rebellious. But what makes it rebellious? Why it such and issue when people of color want better for their population? It is past time for taking responsibility to rebuild a positive infrastructure that establishes a collective neutrality between various communities, groups, and organizations. It is hard to do this without being met with opposition because, society thrives off of social classifications and the intellectually elite.

This is why the Black population has only 9 people in the whole USA that represents the Billionaires Club. The problem with this is that, with such a small number of world changers, we are still stretched out, bitter, and frustrated by those who don’t see the need to change the situation within the minority population. The underserved are critically judged, with large specks of dirt in the eyes of the majority. Many label them unjustly, while we continue holding on to signs that read, “No Justice, It’s JUST US.” But “just” means what?  Does it mean, if we begin to conduct our own resource network of services through financial institutions, healthcare, education, and politics? Does that mean we would see more reproductive, maternal, and  infant disparity gaps closed? Would we see more families living in harmony? Would we see more liberation within the guise of freedom? Just what if we stopped looking to government organizations and services to support the sustainability of our families? We have to be honest that if we did have a different economic profile, would we be willing to invest in our own sovereignty? Would we be in the same position because of the fearful and lacking mentality? But just what if something was actually created to spark the needed change of liberation and independence that broke the chains once and for all?

Human Welfare vs. Maternal Warfare

The uniqueness of the Black population and it’s influence on society is our own. The new-found culture, and how it’s leading many in various directions has it’s good points and not so good points. Those who assume the position as (oppressive theorists) has everyone all twisted up in one big noose. So we have to learn how to reconnect to our innate nature and remove ourselves from this NEW way of thinking about the OLD world. Simplicity rules the game… but these simplistic concepts are NOT being implemented within SOCIAL SOCIETY of community… Because we are being taught by people who do not have the proper cultural concepts around economics, civilization, childbearing, and family. Here lays the problem. There is an assumption that because Blacks are having such economic, social, maternal, and infant hardships, we are not intellectually savvy enough to change these dynamics. This is my take… Instead of attempting to correct cultural behavioral attitudes… Share the balance of understanding. Acknowledge that the theories used to assist in finding these statistics are the culprit. Think of the statistics that tell us that more Black men are gay or in prison than their White counterparts. Majority of these men that are incarcerated are there on faulty charges. Or that men of color – particularly Black men are poor fathers. What about the fact that more women of color have poor birth outcomes than any other population. Then we have the HIV/Aids statics. This is not coincidental. This is maternal warfare. Studies show that most new HIV infections among African American women (87%; 5,300) are attributed to heterosexual contact.

We would not have to dig too deep to see the social and economic profile that is being put on display for people of color. When the Black population begins to realize that our origin and new-found residence determines the whole existence of our current conditions… maybe then many will wake up. Black women are having trouble in childbirth because, epigenetically we are suffering from post-traumatic cultural stress. Our new culture is sensationalized by the economics of reality television, sexual mis-education in music, and poor financial investment choices. More stress comes from the woman’s inability to transcend with these times. This accounts for majority of her emotional trauma because, she does not know where she fits in with herself, her man, or her community, so she struggles with her place in manifesting life from within. This is also warfare.

When our original cultural practices were removed in the new land, our natural, socially intuitive concepts died, with our spiritual through religious indoctrination. It is past time to resurrect the culture of a strong economic movement to save Black women and children, through our own social concepts because, this is so not just about mortality rates… This is about reconnecting to the right mental profile and environment surrounding the “image” of the Black Family as a whole.

Sankofa Led Progression

There is a multitude of minority organizations making phenomenal strides, by educating and producing strong community connections in the population of color. The ICTC and The Birthing Project are just a couple. There are many others serving the population in “community development.” But every time I read a new article about the need of more Black people in the maternal health care rescue, I cringe. I cringe because, there are people doing the work, whether they are being publicly recognized for it or not. The idea of adding more Blacks to the profession of healthcare will ultimately shape the profile of the community of color. So it makes me ask, “How long are we going to have to keep rescuing Black people?” I cringe again because, there is a genocidal presence hovering over our community that highlights everything that we do in error and shortcomings, and not our triumphs. But the funny thing is that what is done in error, is learned behavior. We were taught to hate ourselves, to deny our own instincts, and to denounce native cultural practices. Yet when I see other proud organizations, led by the majority population, teaching their white counterparts, and a fraction of women of color, how to reconnect to the original spiritual concepts of childbirth, with their own organic ideologies, I can’t help but question, the purpose of the mission.

Next these organizations  go out and serve the “underserved” populations, with no authentic connection and this makes me feel displaced, because many minority owned grassroots organizations have small budgets to implement their services. Although sincere in their desires, it keeps the majority populations at the forefront of maternal education and the minority population somewhat invisible.

They are not as successful in our communities because, of rich cultural barriers. It is said, that we live in a diverse society, and maybe this is the problem. We are only diversified by race, ethnicity, and culture. Not to mention by what is in our bank accounts. When in essence of it all we are not oppressed by the color of or skin, but the interpretations of the mind and how we identify with one another based on the color of our skin. When Black people have to fight to prove their competence, their loyalty, their intellect, and their communal validity… this is a problem. When ALL people stop competing in this invisible race war, then we will fare over much better because, LOVE is the greatest historical principle that any population of people can research, and seek to find. With this we can find the same universal outcome. For love is where we will find Sankofa. This is the beginning of what we are ALL searching for. It is not hidden in a textbook, seminar, or lecture. It is deep within the principles of humanity and purpose as a whole. Life is full of abundance and there is no thing or person without access to this universal gift. We just have to remember that we have access to it and that access is through our children.

Make love and not war… The future of humanity depends on it…

“Abundance is not something we acquire. It is something we tune into.”

TUESDAY’S TECHNIQUE ~ GET ROOTED IN THE POWER OF CREATIVE VISUALIZATION

COMING OUT OF THE FOG

There are times that I sit and ponder over the life that we have today. The instant moments of sunshine on our faces in the morning. The smell of fresh baby breath asking for more milk. (My baby call’s it Nean). This post drives my passion in several ways and one is for my “Tree-Hugger” husband and his infinite love for creation and his seed. The other is our intuitive, eclectic, concept of empowerment childbirth education. Yet sometimes there is this bit of fog that likes to hover around our work. I am learning to chart when these times happen and I call it… “seed time.” Taking note on the things that manifest as I am progressing forward. I often have to stop and it comes to me. I’m a carrier. I am deep rich soil. I am always with child. I am a conceiver. I am always PREGNANT! I am always with seed. Not in the literal sense, but in the spiritual. Because I am NOT a person who prescribes to Western methods of birth control, I refuse to become like the “Little Old Woman Who Lived In a Shoe.” The children are always around my door, yelling and playing, fussing and making up childish games. Asking for water and nutritious snacks. Then I stop to think of what happens when we become exposed to the reality of being  “Grown Ups.” This is a technique all in and of itself. This is what I call coming out of the fog.

The Universal Infinite Time

The fog… When we become adults… Most of us assume that when things get weird and clarity seems far away… We are in the center of a storm. The wind and turbulence has taken over and peacetime has a long road ahead. Since there is really no such thing as time, we have to acknowledge the matter of probability and stop waging war on the resistance. Knowing how to bend with the elements is how we determine our innate flexibility. Your power is in the elements of the universe. This is the most creative point of reference anyone can receive when feeling out of time. Balancing the waters of emotion is first and foremost. Remembering to breathe is being at one with the water. Kindling the flames of desire is how we burn those hard rocky clumps into precious gems. This is the basics of grounding your energy in the soil of this Earth in which you plant your visions and dreams. We are not just talking about manifesting money, houses, and cars here. We are talking about manifesting life itself in ALL it’s vastness and abundance. And the most abundant resource is human currency.

And Men All Looked Like Trees…

Understanding the fundamental principles of creation.

A wise man once told me that even a tree goes through adversity when it’s taking root from that tiny seed.

As we walk through the forest and view the trees, we remember they were once tiny seeds.  This is just the same as you and I. The same as an idea or a thought. Trees have an outer cover for protection, food and water inside to use for the first surge into growth, a part that has an affinity for water that will seek out the soil and become roots and a part with an affinity for light that will seek the sun and become leaves and branches.  Nature gives all seeds another characteristic. See any similarities in the human structure of childbirth?

While nature provides a seed all it needs to survive, she provides great opposition to survival.  From the beginning, each seed must compete with its neighbor for water, food, sunlight and space in which to grow.  Sound like any neighborhood you know? Trees produce thousands of seeds.  Very few grow to maturity.  In fact, from a start of 10,000 seedlings per acre at age one year, the final stand of mature trees may number less than 50. The Universe has an enlightening way of balancing the mortality of it’s creation so we must always give thanks.

Centering Thought

In order for ANY seed (a human, a tree, a thought) to sprout, develop, and manifest it must have food, water, sunlight and warmth (the elements).  Until it gets rooted, in the soil it can not come above ground… It can not be born.  As roots go deeper into the soil they absorb water and minerals from the soil and send these up into the stem. Wonder why “stem cells” are such an important commodity?

These act as a chemical laboratory.  In a process called photosynthesis, which takes place in the green leaves of a tree in the presence of chlorophyll and sunlight, the tree takes carbon dioxide from the air and manufactures starches and sugars and gives off oxygen as a waste product.  The formula is simple but the process has never been artificially duplicated. Too bad humans have this limitation. But do we? If all living things were able to photosynthesize like plant life, nothing would ever have to eat to survive… every living thing could manufacture its own food within its own body. There would be no need for teeth, no need for stomachs. But thankfully we are both duly unique and our processes keep us divinely connected to the fundamental principles of the Universe, thus women have the ability to produce milk from our own bodies, to feed our toothless babies, from the starchy, sugary, nutrient rich sap of our beautiful breasts.

STOP!!! Waging War On The Mother of Civilization

Don’t Induce Me.

Introduce Me To An Alternative.

So many times over the past few months, as we talk to perspective late term clients, they tell us that they are being induced. The sad part is — 3 out of 5 have no real medical reason. Either the baby is too big or they are a week past due. HUH! ARE YOU SERIOUS? One young mother said, “I don’t want to tear.” All of these reasons are fraudulent to the process of healthy childbirth. Although it is the woman’s right to choose, induction and synthetic drugs seems to be the instant solution recommended by the physician or caregiver.

It bothers me so that these women, soon to be mothers are not being given the red light, knowing the harmful effects of what this can do to mother and baby. They are not being told the many consequences of having an unnecessary induction. They are not being told that this puts them at a higher risk for c-section. Nor are they being told this can greatly interfere with their desire to breastfeed.

The Fear Of A Big Baby

Okay! first of all let me start by saying, “There is nothing to fear, but fear itself.” What is fear? (False Evidence Appearing Real) So just the other day an expecting mother in our community told my husband (mind you she is 28 weeks gestation) that she was going in at 34 weeks to be induced… OMG! I almost fainted. When he asked her why, she confidently said, “Oh my baby is going to be too big, so I’m going to go in early.” Now every part of me wanted to scream, but I had to keep in mind what I have learned from experience, and then evidence based studies.

What if she had gestational diabetes was my first thought? This sometimes can cause big babies. Which the medical term for big baby is macrosomia, which literally means “big body.” The other is shoulder dystocia. Even still there is no sure shot way of determining that this will be the outcome, thus fostering the need to induce and possibly add the drama of a c-section. Then I thought of the fact that some physicians are just eager to add pressure to moms in order to cash out on drugs and the use of shiny new tools and gadgets, with these harmful assumptions — more often than not.

Other researchers have found that when a first-time mom is incorrectly suspected of having a big baby, that care providers have less patience with labor and are more likely to recommend a C-section for stalled labor.

My husband and I are not medical professionals, but we consult with enough to know that, more women are getting unnecessary inductions and c-sections than the law should allow. This surly adds to the rubble of poor or traumatic outcomes for mother and baby during the process of childbirth. Mom’s are not told the dangers of the drugs, the developmental distress, and the physical and emotional distress that can follow this type of pressure. Somehow too many physicians manage to present these options due to the inadequate assumptions, least giving the body time to process in the normal.

Researchers have consistently found that induction for suspected big babies does not improve the health of moms or babies.

So many woman are tricked into impatience. They miss the gift of what their bodies can do because, they trust their doctors more than themselves. When women are told otherwise, they are often shut down and smacked with a boatload of policies and procedures.  Also in their subconscious, they often hear the tragedy of their own birth stories. To the point that c-section has become a hereditary. Don’t get me wrong, in some cases — such procedures are necessary, but not at the rates that we see today.

Closing Evidence

One should be grateful to have informers like Evidence Based Birth in their arsenal. We are. The greatest part to this article is that WE have to lean how to do the research for ourselves, in order to find great resources such as the one linked above. The more we know the better birth outcomes we will achieve. The more we learn to reconnect to our innate matressence… the more we will find that the evidence surrounding majority of maternal health and wellness is medicalized and based on various assumptions.
